There is nothing more gratifying than catching a
fish with a fly that you have tied and even designed
yourself. Fly tying really is an art form, it takes
patience and concentration and when tying, all other
thoughts and worries disappear. Mitchell was taught
to tie flies from local Portree man Roddie Danobie,
a great tier and brilliant angler.
Fly tying isn't as daunting as you may think, and
the basics can be mastered quite quickly. Sitting side
by side at the bench you simply follow Mitchell's lead,
firstly fixing the hook into the vice, then how
to form the body, tie the rib, wind the hackle catch
in the wing. These are just a few steps in tying a fly.
Fly tying doesn't take up much room and Mitchell
has visited many hotels on Skye to give demonstrations
as well as give tuition to guests. If you would like
lessons at your accommodation, Mitchell will organise
this with your Hotel. Tying a fly in front of a roaring
log fire with a warming glass of malt whiskey at hand
is a very relaxing way to spend an evening. Fly tying isn't seasonal and is popular with visitors
to Skye all year round.

If you would like to commission Skye
Ghillie Fly Fishing to tie some
flies for you , please contact us with your order which
we can then post to you. On request we will send you
a sample fly, so you can check the quality of our workmanship
yourself. If you would like specific
flies tied for you to use while on Skye, please give
Mitchell as much notice as possible so the
order may be completed in time for your arrival.
We however, always have a large selection
of his hand tied flies available for sale, so don't
worry too much if you don't order in advance. Also depending
on how long you are staying on the Island, it may be
possible for them to tie flies that will be
ready for you to take home at the end of your stay.
All flies are tied by Mitchell and only the finest materials are used. We use
Veniard Materials and the hooks are by Kamasan and Partridge
of Redditch. All our flies are finished with 3 coats
of Varnish on the head.
